Stallion Reflection

2017 was an incredible year, painting and spending time with wild horses on the range.  Field study is the foundation of my work, learning from in-depth observation. Investing time painting from life allows me to confront the challenges of communicating a moving 3-D subject onto a 2-D format. I strive to capture the essence and life.

The Mustang Walkabout with Meredith Hudes-Lowder of Equus ferus Wild Horse Photography was the most exciting one yet. Seeing new horses and following their lives through the years. We also returned to Assateague Island to teach painting and photography. These experiences have instilled a profound sense of gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity I have to follow my dream.

I want to thank my collectors and friends for making this an amazing year! All the best to you in 2018!

Wild Stallion, Noble and Free

As I begin to prepare for my summer trip to camp and paint on the wild horse ranges, I remember the experiences of past years and work in the studio. This painting, "Noble and Free", depicts a stallion, running across the range, his neck is arched and his ears alert. He is ready to protect his band and runs out to meet another stallion in the distance.

Mustang Descent

The thunder of hooves still echos in my  heart as I remember the descent of a band of horses from the hilltop. The excitement and freedom was palatable as they ran through the thick sage and dust.

Painting Morning Light

After leaving my campsite at dawn, I came upon a small band of three horses just after the sun light came over the hill. The light caught the mane, tail  and the edges of the horses coat. Communicating the beauty of the morning light and the relationship between the mare and new foal was the goal of this piece.

Wild Horses, Thunder of Freedom

During my summer painting trip, I camped out at McCullough Peaks to spend time with the wild horses there. These are stocky, handsome horses whose rugged appearance portray  an iconic image of wild horses. I was fascinated by this herd as they covered a large amount of ground when they ran into their favorite waterhole. I found them before dawn one morning and gotten a small painting done. Then as they slowly began to move, I could tell where they were headed. I jumped in my truck to get to the waterhole before they did.  The experience of watching and feeling them thunder in touched my spirit. This painting is based on that experience.

Below is a short video with clips of them running and photos of this painting in progress.

Wild Stallions Display of Action

One cool, breezy morning I was out painting and watched several bands of horses come to the river. The breeze combined with the water made for playful interaction. This painting, "Stallion Moves" was based on what I saw that day. I was lucky enough to capture some of the action on video.

Wild Horses, "Free as the Wind"

This painting of Corona, one of the icons of the Sand Wash Basin, expresses what I feel about the power and beauty of wild horses. May they ever be, as free as the wind!

Sparring Colts-Wild Horse Play

One of my stops this summer was at the Monero Mustang Sanctuary in New Mexico. This slice of heaven is a place where wild horses live in a setting that closely resembles their original wild and free habitat.

"Sparring Colts" depicts two young colts at play. This is practice for the time when they spar to defend and protect a band of their own.

A closer look, "Sparring Stallions"

Watching stallions spar is dramatic and exciting. I never know what will happen next. To be able to witness this is something that those who go out look forward to seeing. The display of strength, agility and contest never disappoint. Whether they are sparing over mares, territory,  dominance within the band or playing it is very exciting to watch.

Stallions will eye each other, then trot out to meet. Necks arched, they sniff each others nostrils, paw the ground and often squeal that high pitched sound that seems like it should come from a completely different animal. What happens next could go either way. Will they separate and go on their way or proceed to spar and battle it out on the range?
