Creating Energy in Paintings

When I paint from life, I have a limited time, (as well as moving subjects), to complete a piece. Because of this, there is an energy, vitality and authenticity in them that I am always seeking to replicate in the studio. One exercise I do in the studio is completing paintings within a short period of time. This is usually 30-60 minuets. When I work on larger pieces, I often start them in this timed manner.

Beginning the painting with a random multi-colored wash also results in added energy to the painting. The warm and cool transitions are left to peek through the paint in some areas of the painting and that spontaneity is exciting.

Corona, Wild Horse Icon

During my June 2013 visit to Sand Wash Basin, there was a beautiful full moon. In my imagination, I saw wild horses on a ridge as the moon came up in the distance. The concept for this painting was inspired by that visit. The peaceful, and magical sight of Corona, one of the SWB icons watching the full moon was a vision I had to paint.

Wild Horses, the Wind and Freedom

The symbolism of wild horses, the wind and freedom are very closely tied to each other. Each one awakening a place in our spirit that reminds us to live in the present.

Tango, one of the beloved Salt River wild stallions is depicted here. This tribute painting  reminds me to remain free and in the present, choosing to avoid the hazards that entangle the spirit and mind.

***Note: Tango has not been seen since late summer of 2012. He was last seen trailing about 10 feet of barb wire that  was entangled around his rear leg. Tango, may you always Dance with the Wind.
