Sand Wash Basin

It was great to be at the Sand Wash Basin again! When I pulled up to the place I expected to see horses, I was delighted to see Picasso and his band. It was good to see them and I just sat for a while and soaked up Picasso. He is one of my favorite horses to paint and is full of wild horse life.  During the week I was there he had a romance going on with Sagewood and she joined his band by the end of the week.

During the week I was blessed to have several friends make the trip out to visit me and spend time with the horses. I am very grateful for the time to spend with friends and to meet in person those that I have met online.

The opportunity to paint was always at hand and I got several field studies done.  Including a 6x6 of Corona. I was thrilled to get this done.  He allowed me to observe him from some distance and I got that quick painting done with the morning light hitting his coat.

It has been a challenge to get cell service, charge batteries and to find internet for very brief periods of time. I still need to photograph all the paintings that I have done. I also look forward to editing (thousdands) of photos and a few video clips as well!

Little Book Cliffs

The Little Book Cliffs are a vast a rugged landscape that is home to a wonderful herd of wild horses. I spent some time in the lower canyons and hiked around, finding a few horses before I moved to the upper section. 

My friends, Cindy and Bill Loos of Opus Moon Music met me to spend time touring the Upper area. Cindy and Bill have made Wild Horse Anthology, a beautiful CD about the horses that call the Little Book Cliffs home. I had a chance to get a few small paintings done, while trying to avoid the no-see-ums. I look forward to posting them soon.

Wild Horse Painting Adventure 2013

This time last year I was truck camping out on the Sand Wash Basin, Little Book Cliffs and Monero Mustangs Sanctuary ranges. I had the back of my truck full of art gear, (I also did two shows while I was on the road), and camping gear. It was 22 days that included travel, but mostly painting.

During my first stop at Little Book Cliffs, I will meet up with Cindy and Bill Loos of Opus Moon Music. This is something I am really looking forward to. Their music is heartfelt and speaks to so many aspects of our beloved wild horses.

Wild Stallions Display of Action

One cool, breezy morning I was out painting and watched several bands of horses come to the river. The breeze combined with the water made for playful interaction. This painting, "Stallion Moves" was based on what I saw that day. I was lucky enough to capture some of the action on video.

Wild Horses, Expressing Dramatic Action

One of my goals when painting wild horses, is to bring as much of the experience to the viewer as I can. While out painting, I captured some video footage and wanted to paint the very dramatic and quick encounter of two stallions that happened.
