When I paint from life, I have a limited time, (as well as moving subjects), to complete a piece. Because of this, there is an energy, vitality and authenticity in them that I am always seeking to replicate in the studio. One exercise I do in the studio is completing paintings within a short period of time. This is usually 30-60 minuets. When I work on larger pieces, I often start them in this timed manner.
Beginning the painting with a random multi-colored wash also results in added energy to the painting. The warm and cool transitions are left to peek through the paint in some areas of the painting and that spontaneity is exciting.
