During the summer, we get our share of "Excessive Heat Warnings" for our forecast. But soon, it will be cool enough to get some early morning Plein air painting in. Last week I had the chance to get a couple of Plein air studies done. When the sun is setting, the light changes very rapidly, and during this small landscape study, I focused on getting the subtle shifts of color that happen within the sky on both the vertical and horizontal planes. These changes are always very exciting to experience and quickly paint before they dramatically change. I also had the opportunity for a quick horse study from life. These are always fun and challenging. Sometimes these small studies reveal colors picked up in the sunlight that I have neglected to see before. Time is of the essence when recording these colors and expressing the spirit of the horse.
